Marrika’s successful Start

Marrika a confident and motivated Yamatji woman, set out to find the perfect role for her in 2021. She began her journey at the Waalitj Foundation’s Fit 4 Work sessions where she met her mentor Ben Webb and was guided through building her employability skills.

Through Fit 4 Work Marrika was introduced to the team at Maali Group, including Michelle Laylan, their Aboriginal Development Manager. Maali Group is an Indigenous owned contracting services company with a focus on facilitating greater Indigenous participation in the resources, energy, utilities, and infrastructure sectors.

“As an Indigenous business we think it’s important to give Indigenous people the opportunity to grow, we focus on careers over jobs,” said Michelle.

Michelle said coming to the Waalitj Foundation’s Fit 4 Work sessions is a great way to connect with potential candidates and share insights into employment opportunities at Maali Group.

“When I met Marrika at Fit 4 Work I could tell she was confident and would be a good fit in our team,” said Michelle.

One of the key considerations in Marrika’s job search was finding a culturally safe workplace where she felt comfortable and supported, making Maali Group a great option for her.

“When discussing the role with Marrika that Maali Group had on offer I knew this was the right fit for her just from the excitement in her voice.” Said Marrika’s employment mentor, Ben Webb.

“Maali Group has been a massive support to both the Foundation and our participants in the P242 program. And it is great to see Marrika grab this opportunity and really run with it,” he said.

Now that she is settled in her role at Maali Group, Marrika is growing in leaps and bounds.

“My goal is to continue to grow and progress in my role and hopefully take on more leadership opportunities in the future. I am really proud of how far I have come,”

“Ben and the Foundation have been a great support in helping me find the perfect role for me with Maali Group,” Marrika said.

The Waalitj Foundation is proud to be able to facilitate opportunities for Indigenous organisations to find great Indigenous candidates, growing prosperity within the community.
