Our Annual DSG Basketball Carnival

Over 85 young athletes attended our Annual Deadly Sista Girlz (DSG) basketball carnival. With 12 competitive teams from 14 schools across Perth and WA eager to compete.

It was amazing to see teams from Northam Senior High School, St Brigids College, North Albany Senior High School, Governor Stirling Senior High School, Fremantle College, Southern River College, Darling Range Sports College, Katanning Senior High School, Halls Head College, John Tonkin College, Armadale Senior School, Yule Brook College, Sevenoaks College and Thornlie Senior High School join the competition. We were lucky enough to have some volunteers from our very own staff, step up and referee the games throughout the day.

The teams took part in a round robin of 6 games over 3 hrs. Each game just as good as the next.

Every game showed great effort from both sides. Intensity was present and, so was sportswomanship. All skills were on show during the game, whether it was the players, our DSG Mentors coaching skills or our very own staff referees.

After 4 intense rounds we broke off for a brief lunch break. Upon returning we saw the last 2 games play which decided the top team of both competition pools. The top team from Pool A was Governor Stirling Senior Highschool and the top team from Pool B was Darling Range Sports College, both sent to face off against each other in the Grand Final.

The Grand final was a hard-fought match between Darling Range Sports College and Governor Stirling Senior Highschool. Both teams put on a show with a great combined effort from all players, their fast-paced plays in attack and solid defence was impressive. After a competitive game, the girls from Darling Range prevailed and took home the win.

Congratulations to our winners, Darling Range, and all of our Deadly Sista Girlz who took part in this year’s carnival, as well as the team who put the whole day together.

A special Congratulations to the Overall MVP of the day Selina from Governor Stirling Senior Highschool and to the Grand Final MVP Chanel from Darling Range Senior High school.

It was great to see so many girls participate in the event and to see them all trying their best.

Our DSG program holds engagement events, like the basketball carnival, across the year for students to build connections across our schools.

It is a great day for the girls to step away from the classroom and express themselves through sport and, it highlights the importance of health and fitness.

Speaking to one of our Deadly Sista Girlz, China from Darling Range, about the importance of DSG events, she said “It helps us to connect to different family members that we didn’t know were family members and it helps us to create a bigger community within Perth”.

Deadly Sista Girlz is a holistic education, empowerment and healthy lifestyle program for Indigenous girls operating in 18 schools across Australia. DSG is funded by the National Indigenous Australians agency, with support from corporate partners. Find out more.
