Sports fun for our RSAS Wiluna kids Program

In a year impacted by COVID-19, it was great for some of our Perth team to finally get to Wiluna to visit our Remote Schools Attendance Strategy program.

A few of our resident athletes Josie Janz-Dawson, Troy Cook, Brady Grey and Lindal Rohde were there to catch up with the kids and run lots of sport activities at school and in town.

Over 3 days the kids showed off their basketball, netball and football skills with a range of drills, activities and games.

Also joining the trip were some guests who were there to work alongside our Team including representatives from WAIS, Prok and AMCAP.

As part of our fundraising efforts the Foundation hosts an Annual Gala Dinner. One of the auction items in 2019 was the opportunity to work alongside Foundation mentors in one of our regional delivery locations.

The aim of the regional trips is to provide guests with a firsthand look at the positive work being done in our programs, as well as provide an enjoyable experience for the kids in our programs.

RSAS Wiluna Coordinator Stacey Petterson said the kids really look forward to having additional mentor visits.

“Seeing all the guys here the kids get so excited, happy and they put lots of effort into what they want to do.

“They look forward to seeing brand new faces coming up and they get really excited for them.”

RSAS is run in partnership with Wiluna Remote Community School and aims to improve school attendance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children by working together with families and the wider community.

Supported by the National Indigenous Australians Agency, our local mentors engage other community members and services to work together to overcome any potential barriers that may prevent the kids from regularly attending school through organising rewards, mentor visits, sport and rec activities, community events and supporting families with daily responsibilities.
