Perseverance Pays Off for Thomas
“I take my hat off to the Foundation for all the help they have given me, without them I wouldn’t have been able to get my foot in the door with job opportunities,” said Thomas Collard.
In 2019 when Thomas was looking for a new career direction he came to the Foundation for help. After previously seeking support from other job providers and being disappointed by the outcomes, he found the program offered by the Waalitj Foundation really encouraging.
Through the Foundation’s pre-employment program Plan 2day 4 2tomorrow, Thomas was supported in building his foundational skills and work readiness, this included resume writing help, practise interviews and other training opportunities. This was paired with Fit 4 Work, weekly group sessions in Lathlain which is proudly supported by Shell.
Thomas said that he was able to learn about a range of employment opportunities through Fit 4 Work as well as being able to meet with industry partners and build his confidence networking.
“Fit 4 Work brings you out of your shell and helps build your confidence,” said Thomas.
After working in a variety of roles supported by his mentor at the Waalitj Foundation, Thomas was determined to find the right fit for him. When a job at the Perth Mint came up Thomas’ employment mentor Ben Webb knew it would be a good opportunity for him.
“The Perth Mint has been a really supportive employer and we have built a strong relationship with them,
“As a mentor it is important to know that my participants are going into a positive working environment,” said Ben.
The Perth Mint has engaged with the Waalitj Foundation through several opportunities for our employment and education participants.
In 2021 our Deadly Sista Girlz enjoyed a tour, networking with representatives and a career information session at the Perth Mint. This provided a great way for them to learn more about the Perth Mint and their post school pathways.
Much like the Deadly Sista Girlz, Thomas has found the work of the Perth Mint very engaging.
“I have learnt a lot about working with precious metals in a very professional working environment,” said Thomas.
Thomas has now been working at the Perth Mint for over 12 months, recently securing a full-time position. He is a valued member of his team and sees himself building a sustainable career.
“It has been rewarding to see Thomas gain confidence within his role and seeing him secure a full-time position is a testament to his perseverance,” said Ben.
