Inspiring journey to employment
Proud Jaru man, Shannon Deegan, made the big move from Halls Creek to Perth last year in search of new job opportunities.
He began his journey joining the Waalitj Foundation’s pre-employment program, Plan 2day 4 2tomorrow (P242), where he met his employment mentor Rebecca Butler.
Working with Rebecca, Shannon was able to identify his career goals and map out a plan to achieve them.
“I am so grateful to Rebecca for going above and beyond to support me from the day I joined the program, right through to employment,” said Shannon.
“The P242 program has given me confidence and motivation to achieve goals I never thought I could reach.”
With Rebecca’s support, Shannon was able to attend training to attain tickets and build his employability skills.
Through Fit 4 Work sessions in Lathlain, Shannon was introduced to the team at Veolia Group where he recently secured a full-time Industrial Services traineeship.
Shannon’s employment mentor, Rebecca Butler, said it has been inspiring to witness Shannon’s determination throughout his journey to employment.
“Successfully securing his traineeship, despite many roadblocks, is a testament to Shannon’s disciplined work ethic,” said Rebecca.
Now that he is settled in his role at Veolia Group, Shannon is looking forward to building on his skills and achieving new goals.
“My next goal is to buy a house in Perth for my family. I want to provide my children with opportunities I didn’t have access to have growing up in a remote town.”
The Waalitj Foundation, with the support of Shell Australia, is proud to be able to facilitate opportunities for organisations to find great First Nations candidates, growing prosperity within the community.
