NAIDOC Week Celebrations

Our Community Development Program (CDP) teams kept the fire burning blak, loud and proud this past NAIDOC week! 

We had a busy week across Leonora and Laverton, working with participants and the community to organise some exciting events. 

In Leonora, the Leonora District High School led NAIDOC celebrations to promote community members to support the local school.  

On the Monday, the community gathered at the school for a march, in which they walked north on Gwalia Street, down the side of the Recreation Centre then up Tower Street, past the Police Station, ending back at the school.  

Leah from our CDP team organised a market, with stalls from the Language Centre, Anglicare, HOPE Community Services, CenterCare, and locals from the community with bush medicine and artefacts.   

The team from the Leonora office decided to get involved by hosting a ‘NAIDOC Cafe’. They had a range of yummy offerings including kangaroo gravy rolls, pumpkin soup, damper, coffee and hot chocolate. They displayed a selection of books about Aboriginal language and culture, and artefacts available for community members to browse and read while they waited for their coffee or lunch. The Op Shop was also open for customers with HOPE Community Services present. 

In Laverton, our team held an open day on the Friday with a range of fun activities for the community to get involved in. There was a face painting and braids station, wrist band making and colouring competition, as well as a barbeque cooking up some yummy sausage sizzles. 

A big thank you to our CDP team in Leonora and Laverton, and to everyone in the community who got involved. Our team had such a great time throughout the week. They were so proud of the events they set up and loved seeing the community joining in and engaging in their activities.
